PIES, THE ANSWER TO LIFE’S PROBLEMS
Lifting the lid on our famous homemade pies
If you love pies, you’re in the right place
You know the saying. “If something’s worth doing, it’s worth doing properly”. And to us, a pie is definitely worth doing.
That’s why at The Marlstone Tavern, we only bake proper, traditional, homemade pot pies. Pies with a base, a lid and a festival of flavours in between. There’s too much shortcrust short-changing going on in the pie world these days, and we’re putting a stop to it one batch at a time…
Our fillings have amazing flavour combinations, crafted from beautiful, locally sourced ingredients and lovingly cooked for unbeatable tenderness. Our pastry? It’s rolled out by hand every single morning.
It’s a simple equation for pie, but one that’s been working for us now for nearly twenty years.
As for the dining experience, well it’s family dining, just like eating at home – minus the washing up. We’ll bring you your pie in the kind of traditional dish Granny would be proud of and then you can help yourself to cutlery and kitchen roll (who doesn’t love the stuff) and dig in!
Pies, pies and more pies
Getting your fill of pie
We don’t take bookings for the evening service. Just turn up and we will seat you as soon as we can in our roomy but homely tavern. We make everything fresh so we might occasionally run out of a certain pie, but there are plenty more you will love to try.
Pie individuality
We serve up our rather generously sized pies in individual dishes, and give you a plate to help yourself (it’s better than tackling the whole thing all at once!) Enjoy with a choice of chips or mash, plus a selection of vegetables and a big jug of gravy heaven.
Pot pie history
Pie styles historically depended on how the local baker made his bread. If the bread was baked in pots or tins, pie fillings only needed to be protected from the heat on top / bottom – not all around (as would be required if the baker used flat trays).

Pie menu
Our pie perfectionists are constantly creating. They have a drive to develop new, yummy, pie-tastic creations. Some days the ever changing seasonal food, fires their pie-synapses. On other days it’s the weather that ensures a pie is mustered up, just to comfort you. But most of the time, our pies are conjured from a flash of pie-inspiration, along with nearly twenty years of dedication to the art of making pie.
Because of our need to design pies, our food menu is constantly changing; no two days are the same. But like you we have our favourites, for example, Beef & Hooky ale, Chicken and Mushroom, Steak and Kidney and Chicken, Ham and Leek. But variety is the spice of life, so you will always have the opportunity to try something new. Why not take a look at our sample food menu, it gives a snapshot of the types of pies we will have when you visit, The Marlstone Tavern.
